About 400 million people speak English as their first language and 1,400 million speak it as their second language. In Europe, many countries teach English language in schools. For example in the Netherlands 87% of the people can speak English well, in Malta, English is the second official language. Newspapers written in English are available in many countries around the world.
English is also the most commonly used language in the sciences. English is mostly spoken in the USA but in fact the States do not have an offical language.
Americans have a different accent from British English people. You might think that Americans use more slangs and short forms than the British but it isn't true. British people prefer to write longer and more difficult forms of words, that is, the language is more influenced by their neighbours, the French. Nowadays very few people (only 2%) can speak the real beautiful accent of the so-called Queen's English.
